Frequently Asked Questions
Will Mighty Marker® bleed or feather into raw, unfinished wood?
Does Mighty Marker® work on lacquered or finished wood?
Which Mighty Marker® line is best for rough-sawn lumber versus finished millwork?
Wood behaves like two different surfaces depending on where it is in the cut. Bare wood is porous and pulls a mark into the grain. Lacquered and finished wood is sealed, so the mark has to bond to a coating instead of the wood itself. Mighty Marker® is built for both.
Built for Every Stage of the Cut
Bonding to both porous and sealed wood takes real formula engineering. It comes from Arro-Mark®'s 70+ years of industrial marker craftsmanship.
Raw & Lacquered Wood
On bare wood, the mark has two ways to go: sit on top of the open grain or soak into it. The Mighty Marker® Oil-Based and Mighty X Marker® lines are paint formulas built to sit on top, holding a clean line without the spread risk that comes with lower-grade or plywood surfaces. The Mighty Marker® Ink Marker line does the opposite: it soaks into the grain and becomes part of the wood itself. On lacquered and finished wood, that same Oil-Based and X Marker paint holds just as clean a line bonded to the coating. If a mark ever needs to come off, sanding is the only way to do it. Wood doesn't have a true wipe-clean removable option the way non-porous surfaces do.
Lumber, Job Site to Shop Floor
Rough-sawn framing lumber and finished millwork rarely see the same conditions. Mighty Marker® bonds through sawdust and rough grain on site, and holds just as well on a clean-cut edge in the shop. Lumber yards rely on that consistency for constant quality control and batch identification marking.
Mighty Marker® works on:
- Bare Wood
- Lacquered Wood
- Lumber
For raw, uncoated wood, the Mighty Marker® Oil-Based line bonds directly to open grain, or choose the Mighty Marker® Ink Marker line for a mark that penetrates and becomes part of the wood. For sealed and finished surfaces, Mighty X Marker® adds a xylene-free, HAPS-free formula for enclosed-space use. Compare all three lines to find the right fit for your application.
